The 2024 NFL season is over. The Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes were pummeled by the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in Super Bowl LIX, ending their hopes of a three-peat. It’s now about big boards and free agency.
Let’s take a look at the final grade for the Chiefs, as well as the other eliminated AFC teams to determine what’s next in every situation.
Kansas City Chiefs: A-
Record: 15-1; lost Super Bowl LIX to Eagles
Team MVP: Xavier Worthy
The easy choice is Patrick Mahomes, but by his standards, it was a sub-standard campaign. Instead, we’ll go with the first-round rookie who turned into a monster as the year went on. While he finished only with 59 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdowns, he exploded in the postseason for 19 catches, 287 yards and three scores, all playoff highs. Paired with Rashee Rice in 2025, the Chiefs should have one of the better receiving tandems in the NFL.
Best moment: Beating the Bills in the AFC title game.
Many thought Buffalo was going to deny Kansas City its fifth Super Bowl appearance in six seasons, but that turned out to be a pipe dream. The Chiefs put forth their best offensive showing of the year, scoring 32 points in a 32–29 victory over the eventual MVP in Josh Allen. Mahomes ran for two scores, Worthy produced his first 100-yard game from scrimmage and the defense held at the end behind an array of Steve Spagnuolo blitzes.
Worst moment: Super Bowl LIX meltdown
How could it be anything but one of the all-time Super Bowl drubbings? The Chiefs failed to show up offensively while the Eagles put on a clinic, picking off Mahomes twice in the first half, including a pick-six, while holding the unit to 23 yards over the initial 30 minutes. It was a disaster for a team on the verge of a three-peat, beaten soundly in front of a stunning nation. It’s one thing to lose against a great team. It’s another to be a great team and get humiliated.
Offseason outlook: Free agents galore
The Chiefs will return as one of the favorites to win Super Bowl LX, but not everyone will be back. Kansas City general manager Brett Veach has choices to make with the Chiefs about to see linebacker Nick Bolton, defensive end Charles Omenihu, defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton, safety Justin Reid, guard Trey Smith, receivers Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and DeAndre Hopkins, and running back Kareem Hunt all hit free agency. Some will return, but many won’t.
